What Is Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, RSD, is an unusual kind of neurological disorder that makes hundreds of people worldwide experience flaming sensations and inflammation in the muscles, tissues, skin, bones, and body joints. Even the pain doctors and specialists are amazed by this phenomenal disease and pain medication is used to treat the condition.

People suffering from this disorder usually have had pervious conditions including paralysis, heart strokes, muscle sprains, head injuries, or other accidental injuries resulting in broken bones. The basic symptoms of RSD vary from one person to another, depending upon the severity of the injury.

Some people may feel burning in the joints and back limbs, while others may incur more severe reactions including sensitivity to touch, undue sweating, and swelling. The weirdest part is that the symptoms of RSD don’t even match the injury that caused them, a point of confusion for both pain clinic doctors and sufferers alike.

Reflex Sympathetic Disorder affects old and young alike, but mostly the sufferers who visit pain management center with this disorder have been recorded to be between the ages of 30 and 60. There are three stages of RSD disease. First stage involves joints swelling and inflammation. Stage 2 involves muscle tightness, hair loss, dried out hands, and increased pain as compared to the first stage. Lastly, stage 3 entails severe symptoms including mounting pain, incurable tissue damage, and skin thinning.

If this particular disorder is diagnosed in its early stages, much can be done to reduce the symptoms and associated pain. Therefore, if you are a sufferer of RSD and wish to lead a healthy life, seek medical help asap!

  1. This is a pretty good write up about RSD, the only thing I disagree with is the patient having had a previous condition prior to RSD. I know several individuals who have not done anything to cause injury to themselves and yet was diagnosed with RSD. The most interesting is a lady whose dog slept with it's head on her ankles and one day she awoke with horrible pain and unable to walk well, then was diagnosed with RSD. So, it is possible for anyone to have RSD from the very minor incident to the very major accident.

I do appreciate you doing this write up on RSD so the word gets out more and more about this oddity we can't cure!!
